Intent:

At Great Sankey Primary School, we believe that the learning of a language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils.  It helps them to develop communication skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, with an aim of making substantial progress in one language.  In addition, children’s knowledge of how language works will be developed to lay the foundations for further language learning in the future.  We believe that learning another language gives children a new and broader perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others which feeds into our focus on global learning with an International Schools Award.

Implementation:

Children develop their love of language learning and develop skills throughout their time in school.  The French curriculum at GSP is based upon the 2014 NC and supported by the Janet Lloyd Network scheme of work, which is adapted to meet the needs of our own children. Details of topics covered in each year group can be found on the LTP. 

In EYFS and KS1 children are given the chance to begin to speak and understand basic phrases of French such as greetings when answering the register, as well as counting basic numbers and naming colours, which helps to foster an interest in learning another language and gives them a basis to build their language learning from.

In KS2, French is then taught weekly through a variety of integrated activities that focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as developing children’s awareness of cultural differences in other countries.  We use a variety of techniques to encourage the children to have an active engagement in the modern foreign language: these include games, role-play and songs.  Children are able to access resources that have been made by native speakers of the language which helps develop their listening and speaking skills.  All children are encouraged and praised in any contribution that they make when speaking a foreign language, as we hope to fill them with a passion for French.

Impact:

Our French curriculum is planned to demonstrate progression and to ensure that the children make progress in this subject.  This is done informally during the lessons in order to evaluate what the children have learned.  Assessment during the lessons is split into key areas; Listening and responding; Speaking; Reading and Responding and Understanding of grammar.  Through monitoring, we will measure the impact of the subject through:

  • Pupil Voice:
    1. Children will know more, say more and remember more.
    2. Children will be able to articulate their understanding
  • Monitoring:
    1. Children can recognise and apply key French vocabulary verbally.
    2. Some evidence of children’s written work
  • Subject Leader:
    1. Collate images and videos of children’s learning
    2. Dialogue with colleagues to share good practice
    3. Report the standards in French to SLT and Governors
