Happy New Year and welcome back!

I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and are looking forward to the new term ahead. Please refer to the welcome letter and curriculum overview in the 'Useful Information' section below for further details about some of the things we will be learning this term.

If you scroll to the bottom of the page, you will see our class Twitter feed and link to Google Classroom. We love to use Twitter to share some of the excellent things going on in Elm Tree Class and will use Google Classroom to support learning at home - spellings, homework and useful documents will be uploaded and made available on there.

If you have any queries or need some support, please do not hesitate speak to me at the end of the day, phone or arrange an appointment.

Don't forget to follow @elmtreeGSP if you are on Twitter for regular updates.

Kind regards

Key Messages

Below are some reminders to help you keep on top of our weekly routine:

  • Remember to read for around 10 minutes a day, at least three times per week. Please leave a note in your child's planner so we know how they have got on.

Times Tables:

  • Children should try to use TTRockstars and NumBots regularly at home to help with their recall of times tables and basic skills. Login details for these websites can eb found at the front of your child's planner.

  • Spellings will be uploaded to Google classroom on a Friday. Children should practise these throughout the week ready for their spelling test on the following Friday.

  • Homework will be uploaded to Google classroom on a Friday and should be completed and returned to school by the following Wednesday at the latest. Homework will alternate between a maths or English task each week and will be linked to the unit of work children are covering in class.

  • Our PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. Please ensure that your child comes into school wearing their PE kits as they have done last year.

Our Curriculum

In English this term, we will continue to extend our knowledge of punctuation and grammar and continue to work on our reading and spelling skills. We like to link our English learning to texts and use these to inspire our writing. One of the texts we will be using this term is The Lion and The Unicorn by Shirley Hughes that links in nicely with some of our history work to further our understanding of World War II.

In History this term, we are looking at the enquiry question 'Why is RAF Burtonwood so important to Warrington?'. We will study the airbase that was at Burtonwood, the role it played during World War II and the impact of World War II on Warrington.

In Science this term we will be finishing our work on Electricity before starting our unit of work on States of Matter. This will give us a good chance to retrieve our knowledge of materials and their basic properties / uses from KS1 before our extending our learning by looking at solids, liquids gases and The Water Cycle.

In Geography this term we will be looking at the enquiry question 'How has Warrington changed over time?'.  We will be learning about our local area, how Warrington has become the town it is today and look at how Chapelford village has been built in place of the old Burtonwood Airbase. This will also support our work in History where we look at why RAF Burtoonwood is / was important to Warrington.

During our maths lessons this term we will begin by continuing our work on multiplication and division. The children will start by learning to recite their 3, 4 and 8 times tables before moving on to look at written methods for multiplying a two-digit number by a one-digit number. Later on in the term, we will complete our money and statistics topics.
